Is a ceramic coating worth it?
The short answer
A ceramic coating is worth it if you keep your cars for years, wash them regularly and want that to be faster and safer — it makes water bead and roll off, gives dirt and brake dust less to grip, and keeps gloss for longer than wax. It is not worth it as scratch protection, because it does not make paint scratch-proof, and it is poor value on paint that has not been corrected first, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it.
What a coating actually is
A liquid polymer that cures into a hard, chemically bonded layer over the clear coat. Unlike wax, which sits on top and washes away over months, a coating cross-links with the surface and stays until it is abraded or chemically stripped.
The practical effects are consistent and easy to verify yourself after a rain shower: water beads tightly and rolls off rather than sheeting and sitting, the surface feels slick rather than grabby, and the car stays cleaner between washes because there is less for road film to key into.
What it does not do
It does not make paint scratch-proof. It adds a thin, hard layer that resists light marring better than bare clear coat, and that is all. A shopping trolley will still mark it, an automatic brush will still swirl it, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling.
It does not remove existing defects. It seals them in and makes them glossier.
It does not eliminate washing. It makes washing faster and safer, which is a real benefit, but a coated car still needs to be washed properly.
What actually drives the price
The preparation, not the bottle. On a typical car, correcting and preparing the paint is the large majority of the labour in a coating job — decontamination, clay, machine correction, then panel wipe to remove every trace of polishing oil so the coating can bond.
That is why a coating cannot be honestly quoted from a menu, and why two quotes for "a ceramic coating" can differ enormously without either being dishonest. They are quoting different amounts of work on different paint.

The questions worth asking before you pay for one
What correction is included in the quote, and how many stages? A coating over uncorrected paint is a poor use of money.
Where will the car be during curing, and for how long? A coating cured in an open, dusty environment will pick up contamination in the finish.
What exactly is the warranty, in writing, and what voids it? A verbal number of years is not a warranty.
Is the product certified, and can you see the documentation? If the answer is vague, that is your answer.
