How often should you wash your car in Melbourne?
The short answer
About every two weeks is a sensible baseline for a car in Melbourne, and weekly if it lives outside under trees or does daily freeway kilometres. But frequency matters less than timing: bird droppings, tree sap, brake dust and bug splatter are acidic or abrasive enough to damage paint within days in warm weather, and those should come off as soon as you notice them rather than waiting for the next wash.
The baseline
Every two weeks keeps a car in good condition without over-washing it. Weekly if it is parked outside, especially under trees, or if it commutes on the Monash or EastLink where road film builds fast.
Monthly is enough for a garaged car that does short suburban trips. Less than monthly and you are relying on rain, which deposits more than it removes.
The four things that should not wait
Bird droppings are acidic and, on a warm day, will etch a permanent mark into clear coat within a couple of days. This is the single most common avoidable paint damage we see.

Can you wash a car too often?
Not if it is washed properly. The damage people attribute to frequent washing is really damage from bad technique — dirty mitts, one bucket, dry towels, automatic brushes — repeated more often.
What frequent washing does shorten is the life of wax and sealant. A protected car stays cleaner between washes and is safer to wash, which is the practical argument for a sealant or a coating on a car that is washed a lot.
If you wash weekly, do the arithmetic
Anyone washing two or more times a month is generally better off on a membership than paying per visit, and the tiers include a discount on detailing as well. If you wash monthly or less, pay as you go — we will say so at the counter.
